The first morning Rolf pushed his bike through my doors, Anton turned to me and whispered: “Phil, this dude’s a character. His dad was a clock maker!” OK, so that’s not necessarily the opening gambit to a Hollywood thriller, but there was enough in there to intrigue me. And Rolf’s not disappointed. Meticulous is a word that comes to mind. Irresistibly drawn to solving problems in a mechanical world, if you prefer a phrase. And while I’ve not seen them, I’ve heard murmurs of notebooks filled with drawings to rival Da Vinci. But in my world Rolf’s is bike man, and for three days a week he’s in The Bijou helping Dave craft beautiful frames, one filing stroke at a time.
